Albert L. Rhoton, Jr., MD, nació en Parvin, Kentucky.

Asistió a la Universidad de Washington (Escuela de Medicina) donde se graduó con el más alto nivel académico en la clase de 1959.

Realizó su residencia en el Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center en Nueva York y regresó a la Universidad de Washington en St. Louis para su formación neuroquirúrgica. Después de completar la formación en 1965 se unió al personal de la Clínica Mayo en Rochester, Minnesota, donde se desempeñó como neurocirujano hasta 1972, cuando se convirtió en el profesor y presidente del Departamento de Cirugía Neurológica de la Universidad de Florida.

El Dr. Rhoton ha servido como Presidente de la Asociación Americana de Cirujanos Neurológicos, el Congress of Neurological Surgeons, la Sociedad de Cirujanos Neurológicos, la Sociedad de América del Norte (base de cráneo), el Congreso Interdisciplinario sobre Cirugía Craneofacial y de la Base de Cráneo, la Florida Neurocirugía Society y la Sociedad Internacional para la Tecnología en Neurocirugía e invención de instrumentos.

En 1998 fue galardonado con la medalla de Cushing, el más alto honor otorgado por la Asociación Americana de Cirujanos Neurológicos. Se ha desempeñado como invitado de honor o ha sido elegido miembro honorario de las sociedades de neurocirugía en Asia, África, Europa y América del Norte y del Sur. Ha sido miembro de la Junta Americana de Cirugía Neurológica.

Ha publicado más de 250 artículos científicos y un libro, y ha servido en los consejos editoriales de seis revistas quirúrgicas diferentes.
