Es una complicación bien conocida después del tratamiento de derivaciones del líquido cefalorraquídeo aunque se han reducido con el uso cada vez mayor de derivaciones hechas con piezas soldadas.
En raras ocasiones, todos los componentes de los sistemas de derivación (la válvula y los catéteres) pueden desconectarse y migrar de su posición original a diversas partes del cuerpo.
La migración retrógrada peritoneal o venosa por el espacio subcutáneo ha sido reportado en varias ocasiones
La perforación secundaria de la cápsula del hígado por el catéter es excepcional (Berkmann y col., 2011).
Dislocación cardiaca (Nordbeck y col., 2010).
Mama (Shafiee y col., 2011).
Migración del extremo abdominal a las bolsas escrotales de forma secuencial (Porras Estrada y col., 1999; Fernandez y col., 2001).
Migración del catéter distal a la arteria pulmonar (Isla y col., 1996).
